Matt Leach

Matt Leach is an award-winning Chief Meteorologist for Northeast Indiana and Northwest Ohio’s Weather Authority, ABC21. He’s also a member of the National Weather Association.

Aside from being a self-proclaimed weather nut since his earliest childhood days, Matt’s first forecasting gig began in mid 2009, where he provided detailed video and written forecasts for the Kitsap Peninsula of western Washington State for one of the region’s largest newspaper publications.

In 2013, Matt was hired by Microsoft to write weather explainers for over 60 weather terms that now populated MSN’s “Weather 101” site.

For six months in 2013, Matt also held a coveted weather internship at market-leading KOMO-TV in Seattle. During his time at KOMO-TV, he prepared daily weather graphics, as well as aggressively pushing weather content to social media.

In 2014, Matt was hired as weekend meteorologist and weekday reporter for what was then 21Alive. He produced creative stories in various counties across the area and could be found going live at fairs and festivals across the region.

In 2016, Matt was promoted to the position of Chief Meteorologist where he presents the weather at 5, 5:30, 6 & 11 pm. He can also be found leading team coverage live on television and Facebook when the weather turns severe.

Matt leads the Fort Wayne television market in social media followers and social weather coverage, with nearly 30,000 likes on Facebook. He has also won several awards, including an Emmy for Best Newscast, an Associated Press Award for Outstanding Weather Operation, Favorite Local Television Personality First Place Award presented by Fort Wayne Newspapers, and recognition for being one of the top meteorologists in the state from the Indiana Broadcasters Association.

From growing up in the Northwest to living in South Africa and Namibia, Matt has experienced wild temperature swings. He has seen the thermometer rise well over 120 degrees and fall below minus 40 degrees with wind chills surpassing minus 50.

When Matt isn’t busy chasing storms and severe weather, he enjoys cycling, walking with his dog, Gunther, reading, and doing anything that gives him the opportunity to be with his spouse, Logan.
