Grandpa charged with molestation, accused of hiring hit man

GRANT COUNTY, Ind. (WPTA 21) – The Lopez family has been through trials most families could never imagine.

Last Summer, their son snuck out of their Grant County home and wound up being stabbed in a fight.

He was transported to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.

Ashley and Jason Lopez’s five other kids were picked up by family members.

5-year-old Stella was picked up by her Grandpa, Randy McKinney of Grant County.

That night Stella claims he touched her privates and told her mom he made her do bad things and that her Grandpa was weird to her.

Monday, McKinney was formally charged with child molestation, but in court even more happened.

McKinney’s bunk mate in jail revealed he was plotting to kill Stella’s mother, Ashley.

The detectives testified in court that McKinney hired a hit man and told him he wanted Ashley’s murder to look like overdose.

Then changed his mind and said he wanted her shot and killed.

As Ashley sat in the courtroom Monday and listened to her plotted murder she found out the hit man turned out to be an undercover cop.

“Thankfully it was an undercover that was the hired hit man and I am alive today because of it,” said Ashley.

McKinney even set up a meeting between his sister and the undercover cop in a CVS parking lot with payment for the murder.

McKinney is her husband Jason’s father.

Jason he has never been more angry at anyone in his life and added, “Its almost like we both had to have our head on a swivel 24/7 but I don’t wish it on anyone.”

McKinney is set to be back in court December 11th.

The Lopez family has started a GoFundMe called “Stella’s New Start.”
