Slip sliding away: tips and tricks for the icy roads

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA 21) – It’s time to re-learn those winter skills.

From scrapping the windows, to staying safe on icy roads.

Many of us woke up Thursday morning with an unpleasant surprise, of a thick sheet of ice on our windshields.

With the ice causing many of your morning to freeze, ABC 21 wondered what things we should be keeping in mind when this type of weather hits.

This early start to winter is something the Fort Wayne Department of Public Works said they were prepared.

Liquid brine was applied to the streets making the ice on the roadways less slick and easier for trucks to pick up.

However, regardless of the brine on the streets police said they had over a dozen crashes and several more slide off’s.

Sargent Ron Galaviz with Indiana State Police said there are many ways to make sure you are being safe on the roadways.

He said the first thing to do is to put the distractions down.

Galaviz continued and said scraping all of your windows completely off is another way to make sure you are safe.

Which is something that seems obvious, but it’s one that many people don’t do.

Galaviz said it’s not the snow and ice that causes the crashes it’s how we drive in the winter weather conditions.

Just keep in mind we are all trying to get somewhere safely.

Check out the video for a few tips and tricks to get that pesky ice off your windows.
