Fort Wayne firefighters “rescue” Santa as part of annual tradition

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) – The Fort Wayne Fire Department had an important rescue on their hands Sunday afternoon.

A large crowd gathered outside the Firefighter’s Museum on W. Washington Boulevard at 1 p.m. when they spotted a portly man stuck on top of the building.

It was Santa Claus!

We’re told his reindeer were taking a lunch break, and left old Saint Nick on top of the museum all by himself.

The Fort Wayne Fire Department’s 95-foot ladder truck helped get Kris Kringle down.

After he was on the ground, Santa visited with all the kids at the museum.

Officials at the museum say they love sharing this annual tradition with families.

“I was on the roof with Santa hiding when he appeared,” said Capt. Dennis Giere. “It’s really neat to hear the cheers from the crowd, especially when he gets in the latter truck and they bring him down. It was fun, it’s exciting for the kids, which makes it exciting for us!”

Folks who visited the museum also got to check out the vintage firefighter gear and enjoy some delicious hot cocoa.
