Gymboree poised for bankruptcy filing, closure of 900 stores

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) – Children’s specialty store Gymboree is expected to file for bankruptcy protection within days and could close most — or all — of its stores.

Reports by several business news outlets indicate Gymboree Group Inc. is considering liquidation of its retail outlets, which operate under the names Gymboree, Crazy 8 and Janie and Jack.

The company has about 900 locations in total.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Janie and Jack could be saved if a buyer for that high-end chain steps forward, but the forecast is grim for most of the stores.

Gymboree Group Inc. has already survived one bankruptcy filing, back in 2017, and has reduced its number of locations since that time.

In northeast Indiana, there is a Gymboree store at Jefferson Pointe and a Crazy 8 at Glenbrook Square. The nearest Janie and Jack is in Indianapolis.

The company is based in San Francisco.
