Police: Drug hunting crook swallowed the loot

BUTLER, Ind. (WPTA) –  An accused thief is in the hospital after police say he swallowed the medication he stole.

Investigators with Indiana State Police say Nickolus G. Toepfer of Shipshewana walked into the store on West Main Street with the intent to steal medication.

He slipped the employee a note and was given the drugs he was looking for. It’s not clear what he took because police rarely make that information public.

Employees called police immediately and within five minutes, officers caught up with Toepfer who was inside a getaway car. He was arrested along with the car’s driver, Jason Sheppard of North Machester.

Sheppard is facing charges along with Toepfer, who is in the hospital after swallowing the drugs.
