FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) — Fort Wayne is adding another professional sports team.
Mayor Tom Henry gathered with several business leaders in the community Monday to introduce Fort Wayne FC. The football club will feature men’s and women’s professional soccer.
Erik Magner, a representative for the team, said the business leaders all have one thing in common. They love soccer.
“The owners believe the city of Fort Wayne has the passion and enthusiasm to support a soccer team at this high level of play. The team will build on a strong connection to Fort Wayne and Northeast Indiana to become a point of pride in this community.”
Magner says there is an incredible number of young talented soccer players in Northeast Indiana that need a pathway to grow and develop. The team will compete in the Great Lakes conference in the fourth tier of the US soccer league system.
Mayor Henry says he welcomes the team to Fort Wayne’s professional sports portfolio. The inclusion brings four professional sports teams to the city.
“Historically, the city of Fort Wayne has embraced professional sports as an offering not only to enhance our city’s reputation as a sports-friendly community but also to try to recognize Fort Wayne as a point of destination,” Mayor Tom Henry said.
The men’s team will begin competitive play in May 2020. A women’s league is set to begin in 2022. The owners say the team will generate a positive economic impact to the city and bring in soccer enthusiasts to the area.
