Purdue Pharma reaches preliminary settlement

(CNN) — A drug company accused of driving the opioid crisis has reached a preliminary settlement.

Purdue pharma is offering nearly $5-billion and future revenue to numerous state, local and tribal governments. That’s according to a person familiar with the negotiations.

However many attorneys general are against a deal and say the case is “far from over.” Purdue Pharma, which is owned by the Sackler family, has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say more than 700,000 people died of a drug overdose between 1999 through 2017.
