Crash claims the life of Indiana State Police Trooper

TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WPTA21) – Indiana State Police are mourning the death of one of their own after a trooper lost his life in a single-vehicle crash Friday night.

Four-year veteran Trooper Peter R. Stephan, 27, of Lafayette, was on his way to help another trooper who called for help when his squad car rolled.

Investigators said Trooper Stephan was headed northbound on Old State Road 25 near Stair Road around 10:30 p.m. Friday when his car came up to a curve.

For an undetermined reason, his vehicle left the east side of the roadway, and rolled at least one time before striking a utility pole.

He died from his injuries at the scene.

Trooper Stephan is survived by his wife and six month-old daughter. Family notifications have been made.

“This is a tremendously sad day for the entire Indiana State Police family.  We will band together as we always do in support of Trooper Stephan’s family, friends and co-workers,” Indiana State Police Superintendent Douglas G. Carter said in a statement.
