Fire department extends effort to help teenage burn victim

WHITLEY COUNTY, Ind. (WPTA21) – A local volunteer fire department is joining the effort to help the family of a young burn victim.

A chili and bake sale is set to take place Saturday, hosted by the Cleveland Township Volunteer Fire Department. Proceeds will go toward the recovery of 16-year-old Summer West, who was badly hurt in an explosion at her home last Friday.

Summer is recovering at a Fort Wayne hospital from second- and third-degree burns. She is expected to remain there for an extended period of time.

Already, friends and strangers have contributed several thousand dollars through a Go Fund Me page.

Saturday’s chili and bake sale will take place from noon until 3 p.m. at the fire station in the 100 block of North State Street.
