EACS to close ahead of Red for Ed teacher rally in Indianapolis

ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (WPTA21) – With less than 24-hours notice, East Allen County Schools announced to parents and staff that they will close schools in the district ahead of the Red for Ed rally in Indianapolis on Tuesday.

The district previously said they would hold Walk-Ins, but based on the number of teachers who have requested time off, they’ve changed their minds.

Indianapolis Public Schools canceled school on Nov.19th, or ‘Red Ed Day’, to allow teachers in the district to participate in the rally.

East Allen’s teachers will join more than 14,000 teachers and supporters at the statehouse Tuesday.

“As a District, we worked with our East Allen Education Association weeks ago to organize the walk-ins at all of our buildings. That plan has now changed and grown into a much bigger event taking place in Indianapolis,” Marilyn Hissong, EACS Superintendent said in a letter.

“We support the passion of our teachers and staff who work with our children every day. Parents, please support our staff by keeping an eye on what is happening when it comes to funding public education and supporting our teachers and staff. East Allen County Schools regrets any inconvenience that this may cause to our families but we appreciate your understanding and support.”

EACS said this will not be an e-learning day.

Students and staff will have to make up the day on Friday, May 22, 2020.

Fort Wayne Community Schools is also planning to close on Tuesday for the planned rally.

As of 3:30 p.m. Monday, Northwest Allen County Schools and Southwest Allen County Schools said they plan to be open.
