Restoration of ‘Nickel Plate 358’ gets boost from donors

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) - An effort to bring to life a piece of locomotive history has gotten a boost from a recent fundraising campaign.

More than $16,000 was raised in a matter of weeks to support the restoration of the "Nickel Plate Road 358" -- a diesel engine that the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society has big plans for.

The drive exceeded expectations and was fueled by donations as small as $10 and as big as $3,000.

"Project 358" aims to put the locomotive back into active use on excursions, and to host "engineer for an hour" sessions that help teach about railroad history and operations.

The SD9-type locomotive succeeded the steam-powered engines of the previous generation. The 358 served in Norfolk & Western and Norfolk Southern fleets before it was donated to the historical group in 2010.
