One Man Dead After Shooting

Remaining Ad Time Ad - 00:00

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) -- It's becoming a violent trend in Fort Wayne.

A man was shot and killed in his own home.

The bullets were fired by someone outside the house, and neighbors are worried.

"I've been worried about stuff like that. It's not unusual. There has been a lot of drugs and stuff in this area. Yeah, it can be a rough area," neighbor James Renner says.

Neighbors in the 3400 block of Senate Avenue on the city's southeast side say the immediate area is usually quiet.

Police say a man in his late 40s died after someone shot at least 15 rounds into this Senate Ave. home.

But for the third time in about a week, someone has fired into a home and hit someone inside.

Just after midnight Monday morning, someone fired at least 15 shots at this house.

Police say more than one of those slugs hit a man in his late 40s inside the home, and paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

People on the street say this kind of thing doesn't happen there.

"I just heard, after the shots was over, a car sped this way going down towards Wayne Trace," neighbor Carleton Kelsaw says.

"When I finally looked out the window about 2, 2:30, that's when I see the squad cars out in the street and I have no idea what's going on. They parked in my driveway, turns out the incident's two doors down, I understand," neighbor Ken Branning says.

He says the house had been vacant at some point, and that some remodeling had just been done a few weeks ago.

"It's been a rental for quite a while, apparently. I see different, once a year, a different group moves in or out," Branning says.

The neighbors we talked with say they don't understand the recent spate of shootings in the Summit City where someone has shot at a home, hitting people inside.

An 8-year-old boy was shot in the chest as he slept in his bed and a 13-year-old boy was hit several times when he answered the door.

Both of them are expected to survive.

"It's crazy, all this nonsense. I don't understand why you can't settle your issues or whatnot handily. But for you to shoot in the house and you don't know if kids are going to be there or elderly people and you just randomly shoot into a house? That's kind of nuts. It's absurd to me," Kelsaw says.

Someone in the community contacted Catholic Xharities to help the man's wife and children with counseling and other needs.

An autopsy could be scheduled Tuesday for the coroner to determine the official cause of death.

If it is ruled a homicide, it will be Allen County's third for the year.

If you know anything about this shooting, police ask that you call detectives at 427-1201 or Crime Stoppers at 436-7867.
