Minor arrested in connection to Hicksville church building fire

HICKSVILLE, Ohio (WPTA21) - A minor is accused of sparking a fire at a Hicksville, Ohio church while students were inside taking classes this month.

On Jan. 15, authorities responded to a classroom building next to St. Michael Catholic Church.

Hicksville Police Chief Mark Denning said firefighters brought the blaze under control in about 30 minutes. Two children and a teacher were examined by medics at the time.

The children were treated for possible smoke inhalation and were sent home.

On Tuesday, Hicksville Police and the Ohio State Fire Marshals Office arrested a juvenile in the case.

Officers took the individual to the Northwest Ohio Juvenile Detention Facility.

The minor is expected to appear in Defiance County Juvenile Court at a later date.

Prosecutors expect to file aggravated arson charges against the juvenile.

Work to clean up the damage at the church is already underway.
