Grant County Coroner ID’s man shot in Marion home


GRANT COUNTY, Ind. (WPTA21) - The Grant County Coroner's Office identified the man who was found shot to death near the backdoor of a Marion home on Monday.

Just after 1 p.m. on Monday, a man called 911 to say he had just shot and killed an intruder at a home at 6111 South 500 East in Marion.

When police arrived, they found two people inside and took them into protective custody.

Officers found 33-year-old Steven Nickell suffering from a gunshot wound to the head and the torso.

He was lying near the backdoor of the home.

The nature and cause of death are still under investigation.

The Grant County Sheriff's Department has conducted several interviews and has collected evidence from the scene and other locations related to the case.

One person who was taken into protective custody was arrested on an unrelated warrant in regards to a parole violation.

Police said at this time, no other suspects are believed to be at large.
