MONTICELLO, Ind. (WPTA21) - A petition aiming to save the Indiana Beach theme park has garnered more than 20,000 signatures in its first two days.

Dustin Sprunger launched the initiative with the hope that "maybe, just maybe, someone out there can save our little jewel of a park."

The "change.org" petition hit the 20,000 mark about 5 p.m. on Thursday.

ABC21 reported on Tuesday that Apex Parks Group shut down the 94-year-old site when it could not find a buyer for the property.

Indiana Beach has been the closest traditional theme park to Fort Wayne, though it is dwarfed by industry giants, such as Cedar Point, Kings Island and Six Flags Great America, which are also within a few hours' drive and which have offered bigger, faster rides.
