WHITLEY COUNTY, Ind. (WPTA21) – Criminal charges have been filed against a Whitley County couple after more than 60 dogs were carted away from their home.

Eugene and Loretta Childers are both facing 10 counts of cruelty to animals, all misdemeanors, with a bond set at $50,000 for each person.

Earlier this month, Whitley County Health and Zoning officials along with police showed up at their home near Crooked Lake and took the dogs to the Whitley County shelter.

People living near the older couple called in complaints that they were hoarding dogs and at times were letting them run loose.

Loretta Childers has been targeted in over 20 civil suits and for ordinance violations regarding various issues with dogs.

Officials say she also owes thousands of dollars in unpaid fines.
