CDC lists effective disinfectants, store shelves empty

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) - As shoppers make runs for cleaning supplies during the COVID-19 outbreak, the CDC has released a list of products it believes are effective at eliminating the novel coronavirus from surfaces.

Some products are common, while others are known mostly to professional and industrial users. Below is a list of the most common products, but it is by no means exhaustive:

  • Clorox Multi Surface Cleaner + Bleach
  • Clorox Disinfecting Bleach 2
  • Clorox Disinfecting Wipes
  • Lysol Clean and Fresh Multi Surface Cleaner
  • Purell Professional Surface Disinfecting Wipes
  • Peak Disinfectant
  • Sani-Prime Germicidal Spray

The complete list can be found here.

Many stores are reporting shortages of disinfectants and paper products.

Stores are also placing limits on the number of certain items customers can buy. In an email to customers, Kroger leaders said they were working to restock items quickly, while cleaning and sanitizing surfaces inside their stores.

In a similar email, Target leaders said that store workers would clean surfaces like checklanes and touchscreens every 30 minutes. Stores are also limiting certain items.

Health officials say vigorously washing your hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds is an effective way of cleaning your hands and reducing your chances of becoming ill.
