Sunday shooting in northeast Allen County leaves one dead

ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (WPTA21) — What was first reported to police as a traffic accident has turned into a homicide investigation in northeast Allen County.

The Allen County Sheriff's Department said they were notified of a traffic accident in the 5300 block of Hursh Road around 3:30 a.m. Sunday.

When police arrived, they found 36-year-old Nicholas Phillips in the driver's seat of a car with gunshot wounds. No one else was in the car at the time.

Phillips was taken out of the car and transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Investigators say a disturbance happened before the crash involving a second victim, who was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. No other details on the disturbance were given.

Phillips' death marks the 10th homicide in Allen County so far this year.

This incident remains under investigation by the Allen County Sheriff’s Department, Allen County Prosecutors Office and the Allen County Coroner’s Office.
