Coroner: 19-year-old shot and killed Tuesday on Avondale Drive


FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) - The Allen County Coroner's Office says a 19-year-old was shot and killed on Avondale Drive Tuesday afternoon.

Jaden Diaz Lee Nelson, of Fort Wayne, was shot in the torso. The coroner ruled his death the 15th homicide of 2020.

Around 4:10 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, Fort Wayne Police dispatchers were alerted to a shooting.

The victim showed up to the Philips 66 gas station at S. Calhoun Street and E. Pettit Avenue, but police said the shooting happened on Avondale Drive.

A Fort Wayne Police Department public information officer told ABC21 someone shot the victim inside a vehicle.

The man was able to drive to the gas station to get help.

Medics rushed him to a local hospital in critical condition, but he later died at the hospital.

Fort Wayne Police also revealed they have one person of interest in custody.
