Reel disappointment: Movie theaters unable to open for holiday weekend

Brokaw Movie House

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) - Indoor movie theaters that were planning to reopen this weekend or next found themselves reassessing those plans after Gov. Eric Holcomb issued new guidance on Thursday.

Cinemas had been included in what is dubbed "Phase 3" of the state's reopening process, which allowed for those facilities to begin operating again -- with restrictions -- by Memorial Day.

Now, they will wait until June 14 and the implementation of Phase 4.

Though the big multiplexes were not planning to reopen just yet, a few movie houses in the area -- such as the Brokaw, in Angola, and ABCinema, in Decatur -- had made plans for their first screenings this weekend or next.

That won't happen now.

Drive-in theaters are already back in business and are unaffected by the governor's announcement.

Three of the four area drive-ins are now showing films. The GQT Huntington Twin has not yet announced its plans.
