ABC21 honored with two ‘Best Newscast’ Emmys

CLEVELAND (WPTA21) - ABC21 took home honors in two of the four "Best Newscast" categories in the 2020 Lower Great Lakes Emmy Awards.

Winners were announced in a virtual ceremony Saturday night -- one that replaced the traditional annual gala.

ABC21 received statuettes in the competitions for Best Daytime Newscast and Best Weekend Newscast for markets 51-plus (all stations in the region excluding those in Cleveland and Indianapolis).

An edition of "ABC21 News at Noon" was honored in the daytime category, which includes newscasts from mid-morning through the 5 p.m. hour.

"ABC21 Weekend News at 11" won the weekend news competition.

The awards ceremony also featured a salute to one of the most tenured people in local broadcast history, ABC21 sports anchor Dean Pantazi, who was inducted into he Gold Circle.

Pantazi was recognized for his work spanning 50 years in broadcasting -- 45 at WPTA TV.

The 51st Annual Lower Great Lakes Emmy Awards included presenters from across local and national broadcasting. Among them: ABC News Chief Meteorologist Ginger Zee, NBC "Meet the Press" moderator Chuck Todd, CBS anchor Nora O'Donnell and Fox Sports' Chris Myers.
