Governor Holcomb's mask mandate, which went into effect July 27th, is requiring adjustments from businesses and customers across the Hoosier state.

INDIANA (WPTA21) - Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb will sign an executive order that will require masks for all Hoosiers effective Monday, July 27.

Holcomb said he will sign the executive order Thursday.

"When I asked you months ago to hunker down, you did. We did. We slowed the spread. It's just factual. We protected our hospitals," Holcomb said.

"While we have continued to fare better than many other states, now we have to hunker down in a different way. Which is why wearing masks will become the fashion of the day."

Face coverings will be required for those 8 years and older in public indoor spaces, public transportation and outside public spaces when it's not possible to social distance.

A mask or other face covering may be factory-made, sewn by hand, or improvised from household items such as scarfs, bandanas and t-shirts. The mouth and nose should be covered.

Students in grades 3 and up will be required to be a mask at school, along with teachers and staff, Holcomb said.

Exceptions to the mandate will be made for people with medical issues, strenuous physical activity, and when you are eating or drinking.

While it will be a Class B misdemeanor if you break the mandate, Gov. Holcomb said there will not be "mask police" seeking you out.

Indiana's Chamber of Commerce, representing the interests of businesses statewide, supported the move.

“Too many Indiana companies, employees and their families are in their fifth month of financial turmoil," its president and CEO, Kevin Brinegar, said. "That will not change and our economy will not be on the full road to recovery until some certainty is brought to this uncontrolled pandemic.

"The wearing of masks is a proven strategy for protecting others and enhancing our health – both physical and economic. Governor Holcomb’s order is a necessary step at this time in continuing to reopen Indiana safely.”
