Red Cross encourages donations as the pandemic continues

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) - The American Red Cross is encouraging donations to keep up with supply as the coronavirus pandemic continues.

The Red Cross has an emergency shortage of convalescent plasma, which is a potentially lifesaving treatment for patients with COVID-19. The demand for plasma more than doubled over the last month as the number of coronavirus cases increase, officials said in a release.

Convalescent plasma is collected from patients who have recovered from an infection and have antibodies that might help fight that infection.

The Red Cross is looking for people who have fully recovered and received a verified COVID-19 diagnosis to sign up to give plasma here.

Blood donors are also needed to keep supply strong. As a thank you the Red Cross is giving those who donate blood, platelets plasma, including convalescent plasma, between August 1 through September 3 a five dollar Amazon gift card.
