Police: Battery incident between father and son causes police standoff

STANDOFF 9 15 2020 (1)

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) - Fort Wayne Police said what started as a domestic battery investigation turned into an hours-long standoff Tuesday morning.

Police were initially called to the 700 block of Valdosta Drive for a battery between a father and son.

The son was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.

There was a report of a gun being involved, and officers later found it in the yard. It's not clear at this point how it is involved.

Police weren't able to make contact with the person inside, but around 11:20 a.m., police took 51-year-old Kenneth Lawless into custody once they secured an arrest warrant.

Officers used chemical agents to coax him out.

Lawless is now charged with felony domestic battery.

Shawnee Middle School and Lincoln Elementary School were put on lockout due to the situation, police said. The lockout has since been lifted.
