DEKALB COUNTY, Ind. (WPTA21) - Three people are dead following a multi-car crash on I-69 just north of Auburn, according to Indiana State Police.
The crash happened around 3:15 p.m. Wednesday near the 332-mile marker. That's three miles north of the Auburn exit.
An Indiana State Police Public Information Officer told ABC21 crews that the pileup involved two semis and five vehicles.
Police believe one of the semis failed to slow down as the driver approached a construction zone and crashed into several vehicles before coming to a stop.
Police said one person died in the wreckage. Rescue crews removed five people from another vehicle and they were taken to the hospital. Two were pronounced dead at the hospital, the other three sustained minor injuries.
Troopers had closed the northbound and southbound lanes on I-69 and had motorists exit at the County Road 11a exit at mile marker 326.
The investigation is ongoing.
