WELLS COUNTY, Ind. (WPTA21) - High up on a lift, artist David Rice began applying orange paint to a metal panel wall Wednesday afternoon.
Rice is working on the oriole that will become the centerpiece of his mural along Market Street.
A Portland, Oregon native, Rice is in Indiana for the first time this week, chosen for Wells County's Mural Fest piece.
The community of Bluffton, Rice said, has embraced him and his artwork.
Rice began painting public art five years ago, working under a mentor to learn the craft.
Now he's using Mural Fest to give back, working alongside a mentee, showing him his own techniques.
Rice said he tries to revisit places that have welcomed him into their neighborhoods.
"Working on projects, in especially smaller communities and smaller towns, you really get to see how it effects the people that live there. The population, the residents. And it's really fun to see their reaction. They really take you in and make you feel like one of their own, so definitely any chance I can go back to any of the places I've done a project in that is definitely a blessing," said Rice.
Rice is one of the eleven artists chosen for Mural Fest, a project by the Northeast Indiana Regional Partnership. Mural Fest concludes Friday, September 18.
