FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) - Work has begun on the next phase of riverfront development in downtown Fort Wayne.
City leaders and developers held a chilly ceremony to mark the beginning of work on The Riverfront at Promenade Park Thursday morning, which will add a six-story mixed-use building to the Fort.
This development will go up on the northeast corner of Superior and Harrison Streets. It's one of two projects that will be on either side of Headwaters Park.
Indianapolis-based developers Barrett & Stokely are putting close to a $90 million private investment into the space that will include more than 200 apartments, seven townhomes, and a 900-space parking garage.
"When you put public money into places like Headwaters Park, Promenade Park, Parkview field, The Landing and the other improvements we made, I think you'll see other private investments," Fort Wayne City Councilman Geoff Paddock (D-5th District) said.
The garage is expected to be completed in early 2022 and the apartments and commercial space in early 2023.
“The Riverfront at Promenade Park sends a strong message that the private sector believes in Fort Wayne and our community’s vision for riverfront development,” Mayor Tom Henry said. “I continue to be encouraged by the progress and momentum we’re experiencing. It truly is our time.”
