FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) - Fort Wayne City Council members oppose a bill they say would take authority away from local and county governments to regulate the installation of cell phone towers in the area.

All members of council signed letters asking State Senators Brown, Kruse, Busch and Zay to vote no to House Bill 1164.

In the letter, council members said they understand the importance of expanding communications, but said many of the new cell towers are being placed in areas without local input and "intrude on properties and are unsightly."

"Some are quite large and can block views, with unlimited density, unrestricted height, and unrestricted numbers," council members said in a letter. "Local governments, and those of us who are closest to our constituents, should have more say in where these towers are located, what they look like, and how many can be assigned to a particular area."

Council said, this is another example of taking home rule away and precluding local government from decisions.
