STEUBEN COUNTY, Ind. (WPTA21) - A northeast Indiana family is mourning the loss of two sons killed in a single-vehicle accident Thursday evening.

Around 5:30 p.m. Thursday, investigators believe 16-year-old Tyler Michael Curtis was driving "at a high rate of speed" on CR 675 W, south of SR 120 in Millgrove Township, going over a small hill when he lost control and hit a tree, almost head-on.

Deputies say the vehicle split in two causing the driver and his 14-year-old brother Chace Curtis to both be thrown from the car.

Investigators say the 16-year-old died at the scene, while his passenger was airlifted to a Fort Wayne hospital in critical condition.

Authorities said Chace later died from his injuries Friday afternoon.

Both boys are students at Prairie Heights Community Schools in LaGrange County.

Superintendent Jeff Reed sent out a letter to parents and said counselors will be on hand in the coming days.

Both brothers were a part of the Panther's baseball team. Team coach TJ Guthrie posted a statement on social media about their passing:

The crash remains under investigation.
