COVID clinic at Coliseum offers thousands of appointments over four Tuesdays

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) -- State health leaders asked Allen County's health department COVID vaccination clinic at the Memorial Colisem to take thousands more Pfizer vaccine doses.

Instead of offering more appointment spots over time, local health administrators decided to open the clinic for four Tuesdays in April and May.

900 people will get shots on each of those four Tuesdays, and the remaining doses will be spread out during regular Wednesday through Saturday hours.

For a clinic already administering nearly 100 shots an hour, the added doses will push that number higher.

"Today is our first day where we're over 900 and we are pushing 120 per hour, so it'll definitely test the site, test the amount of staff that we have. And we do hope the effeciencies of no longer doing Moderna and just having Pfizer here will help with that," said the Allen County health department's administrator, Mindy Waldron.

Local health leaders say if you find a different appointment and want to skip the original one you booked at the Coliseum, it's important to call to cancel it.

The Coliseum clinic uses highly-trained full-time, part-time, and volunteer workers who have picked up extra shifts to give the shots.

Waldron says if you find an earlier appointment and want to skip the original one you booked at the Coliseum, it's important to call to cancel it.

"It's not a wasted dose, it's just a wasted appointment that someone could take earlier. So that we can free up that appointment in real time so that somebody can grab it even that day," Waldron said.

It's a good reminder that if you haven't found an appointment for the time you need, you keep checking throughout the day to see if something has opened up.

Pre-registering for your appointment will also save you time so that an employee doesn't need to ask you all kinds of questions when you arrive for your shot.

If you need to cancel the appointment you scheduled at the Coliseum, call (260) 449-7722.

Leave a voicemail with your full name, date of birth, and phone number as well as the date and time of the appointment you originally booked.

That way, the time slot can be opened up for someone else to get their shot.
