Homestead High School teacher succumbs to illness

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) - A beloved French teacher at Homestead High School has passed away.

Marius Sagnon fell seriously ill in late February and had been hospitalized since.

His students and others rallied to support him, raising thousands of dollars to help cover expenses and taking other steps to provide encouragement to Sagnon and those closest to him.

Administrators told ABC21 that they notified the student body of Sagnon's death on Monday.

His fiancé, Kate Bauman, has offered her thanks to those who have provided comfort.

Bauman shared a message via the Caring Bridge website. It reads:

Marius Passed (Friday night) surrounded by love with peace and dignity. Thank you all for your unwavering support.

Sagnon was the 2019 Southwest Allen County Schools District Teacher of the Year.
