No women’s pro soccer in Fort Wayne — for now

No women's soccer this year

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) - The launch of a professional women's soccer team in Fort Wayne will have to wait.

The Fort Wayne Football Club announced that it will not field a women's team in 2021, as had been planned.

The club said changes to the collegiate soccer schedule -- which pushed matches later into the calendar year -- is the primary reason.

"We are looking forward to the formation of a Women's team in 2022 with tryouts to be scheduled for January," the club said.

The men's team expects to compete in its inaugural season, as scheduled.

Its matches will take place at Shields Field and it will participate this year in USL League Two.

After two seasons, plans call for the elevation of the club to USL League One, and preliminary steps have been taken that could lead to construction of a new stadium just north of downtown, which would serve as a future home for the team.
