FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) -- Big changes are coming to the COVID-19 vaccination clinic at the Memorial Coliseum.
A few weeks ago, Allen County's COVID clinic at the coliseum served 800 to 900 clients a day.
"We've dropped significantly to in the 400 and 500 range, probably. Still a respectable number, but far less than we can accommodate," Health Department Administrator Mindy Waldron said.
Waldron says only about 300 people a day are registered for COVID shots next week, but she hopes now that schools are letting out that number will go back up, which would boost Allen County's vaccination rate higher than about 40%, where it sits right now.
"We've been talking about the incentives to being vaccinated as you go into the times that you want to travel less restrictively, you want to go back to school without masks, and our ticket to that is vaccinations," she said.
She says over the past few weeks, clinic staff have seen more people 20 and younger getting vaccinated, which she says is encouraging.
"The more of those folks that get vaccinated, the more teams that can stay full throughout the fall, the more schools might have the liklihood of not needing masks, that, again, is our ticket. So getting everyone vaccinated is our goal, but getting that younger population might help with some of the activities this summer," she said.
Due to the declining demand overall, on June 17 the vaccination clinic will shut down and staff will move everything from the Coliseum to the health department's medical annex facility on the border of Fort Wayne and New Haven.
That location will offer 50 appointments on Fridays in June beginning the 11th, then by July 2 will be able to offer time slots during regular business hours Monday through Friday.
"We do feel like we will probably be looking at somewhere in the 60-100 appointments per week in July and on. But we can shift up or down there," Waldron said.
The health department is also working with Super Shot so that parents can get their children a COVID vaccine while they're getting other shots for back to school.
