Digging Deeper: Suspect in slaying of 4 had warrant out for arrest in Starke County

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) - An armed and dangerous man wanted in connection to the deaths of a woman and her three young children, was already wanted by police in Starke County

According to court documents obtained by ABC21, 21-year-old Cohen Bennett Hancz-Barron was serving a six-year sentence for a robbery he pleaded guilty to in 2019.

Hancz-Barron was serving out his sentence at a drug rehabilitation center in Tippecanoe County.

But in April, online court records show he walked away from the facility and had a warrant out for his arrest ever since.

The robbery he was serving home detention for happened in Starke County in August 2019.

The victim told authorities Hancz-Barron pointed a gun at him and demanded he hand over his wallet because Hancz-Barron had a baby on the way and needed money.

The man told police Hancz-Barron then told him he had better hand over the wallet or he'd shoot him in the head and burry his body in a ditch.

Once the victim was able to make it to safety, he called police.

Starke County authorities reached out to the Fort Wayne Police department who were able to find Hancz-Barron in Fort Wayne.

Hancz-Barron took a plea deal in the case that sentenced him to 6 years in 2020.

In February 2021, the court amended his sentence so that he could serve his remaining time at Home with Hope, a residential drug treatment program.

But in April, online court records show he walked away from the facility and had a warrant out for his arrest ever since.

Hancz-Barron is now at large and wanted in connection to a homicide investigation in Fort Wayne.

He stands about 6 feet tall and weighs about 205 pounds.

According to police, he was last seen driving a black 2010 Ford pickup truck with license plate "RASHAD." He may have recently dyed his hair red.

Detectives said he is considered extremely dangerous, and if you know where he is, you're asked to call 911.
