CLEARWATER, Fla. (WPTA21) - A 25-year-old Ohio man accused in the death of his 9-week-old son tried to escape a maximum security jail Wednesday morning.
According to a Florida Sheriff, 25-year-old Cody Jondreau had been wanted in Williams County, Ohio on a murder warrant in connection to the death of his infant son in September 2020. He also faces felonious assault and endangering children charges.
US Marshals found him in Polk County, Florida in May of this year. He was transferred to Pinellas County at the end of May to await extradition back to Ohio.
Jondreau had been housed in the C-wing in South Division, which is known as the maximum-security area of the jail.
According to the Sheriff's Department, Jondreau climbed the northwest wall of the yard during recreation time.
He made it through the razor wire in about 26 seconds, ran across the roof and jumped eleven feet to the ground.
Deputies chased him over a second fence and later took him into custody a short distance later in the parking lot of a nearby business.
During his attempted escape, the suspect suffered multiple injuries, so deputies took him to the hospital for treatment.
Once he's cleared from the hospital, authorities will take him to Ohio to face charges.
