FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) - A woman who was shot on Eileen Street Sunday has now died from her injuries, according to family of the woman.
The 20-year-old woman’s cousin Olivia Davis says her name was Shelby von Holdt.
Davis says she died Tuesday morning in the hospital from her injuries and her parents were too devastated to talk this soon.
"She was a big part of all of our lives, so it’s taking a big toll,” Davis said. “I didn’t make it to the hospital, I was on my way but her kidneys were failing.”
A close family friend, Jo Overdeer, says von Holdt held on as long as she could.
“Shelby's mother, her father, her sister and her two brothers are struggling right now and they couldn’t be here to speak,” Jo Overdeer said. "The family would like to say, thank you to everyone who were prayer warriors for Shelby."
They say they were devastated but felt some relief when the woman police say was responsible was charged the same day.
"I’m so glad she’s getting justice; she deserves it more than anybody,” Davis said. “I don’t think anyone can really fathom why someone could do something so violent to someone. And we all hope we can get answers someday.”
They say von Holdt was the kind of girl who made a grand entrance, the life of the party, lover of animals and would do anything for her friends and family. Davis says she was particularly close with her niece.
"It’s didn’t matter what you were going through, she would drop anything and everything to be there,” Davis said. “Anybody who knew Shelby knew she wanted to be a princess.”
The family says they are also grateful for how quickly the police worked to arrest the suspect.
They also want to say thank you to the critical care team at the hospital who did all they could to try and keep her alive.
