FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) - Fort Wayne police are looking for a man after they say he dove into the retention pond at Jefferson Pointe.

Officers on scene tell ABC21 they were involved in a chase that ended at Jefferson Pointe. That's when the man jumped into the pond and went through the pipes that connect to it

Police remain on scene searching for the suspect. It was not immediately clear why he ran.

A witness told ABC21 she saw the man, shirtless, run across the street and dive into the water, then start swimming.

"He's swimming hardcore into the sewer," Tracii Young said. "I thought, 'oh my gosh, he's really on the run.' And then I heard the sirens, and I was like, 'yeah, he really is on the run.'"

Young estimated the man dove in about 7:20 p.m.

At least one officer climbed down toward the water, while a Fort Wayne Fire Department ladder truck provided support.

Jefferson Pointe itself remained open throughout the evening.

This is a developing story, stay with ABC21 for updates.
