East Allen County Schools board meeting (Sept. 7, 2021)

ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (WPTA21) - East Allen County Schools will not be requiring masks inside school buildings.

EACS Board of School Trustees voted 4 to 3 in opposition of the district's revised 'Return to School Plan.'

President Todd Buckmaster was the tie breaker, voting no to the plan that would have required masks inside school buildings for a month.

Masks will remain optional.

The revised plan called for ask mandate for students, faculty, staff & visitors inside all school buildings beginning Sept. 13 through Oct. 14. The mask rules would also apply to field trips and for anyone partaking in after school events indoors.

With the use of masks, the plan would have reduced quarantines for students and staff because it would have allowed those in close contact with someone who tests positive for COVID-19 to not have to quarantine if they're not showing symptoms.

A notice from Superintendent Marilyn Hissong asked the board to approve the revised "Return to School Plan."

Protesters with signs gather outside the East Allen County Schools Board meeting, where a vote on revised safety protocols was set to take place.
