Nation’s top education official set for visit to Kendallville

Education Secretary Miguel Cardona

KENDALLVILLE, Ind. (WPTA21) - U.S. Sec. of Education Miguel Cardona is scheduled to visit northeast Indiana next week as part of a four-day, 10-school Midwest tour.

Cardona is expected to spend some time at Wayne Center Elementary School, in Kendallville, on Sept. 22.

Other stops include Chicago, Milwaukee and Toledo, Ohio.

It comes several weeks into the new school year and as districts work to balance health and educational concerns.

“The best part of fall is welcoming students back for a new school year, and I'm thrilled to be traveling across the Midwest to celebrate the return to safe in-person learning," Cardona said in a statement.

The Secretary will criss-cross the region in a bus, stopping at grade schools and universities to meet with staff and students.

East Noble Schools Corporation Supt. Teresa Gremaux told ABC21 that her office was contacted by a representative of the Department of Education on Monday and that the district is making arrangements in advance of the visit.

She said Cardona has expressed interest in meeting with administrators, teachers and staff to thank them for their work through the COVID-19 pandemic.

She expects the visit will be brief and take place in the first half of the school day.
