HUNTINGTON, Ind. (WPTA21) - Outside of Fort Wayne, Huntington is one of the biggest cities in 21Country. We took a trip to an oasis amid the city that you might drive past without seeing, along with a spot in Huntington county that rivals the finest of dining experiences.
While you'll find plenty of parks in northeast Indiana, it's not everyday you find one below eye level.
In the 1800s to early 1900s, Sunken Gardens was a rock quarry. After it was abandoned, a local group of investors from Huntington decided to buy and renovate the property. In 1929 the park was dedicated to the city of Huntington.
Other than a place to find some peace and quiet, Sunken Gardens is a popular spot for weddings, photo shoots, vigils, and park programs.
In a few months, Sunken Gardens will close to the public as it does every year for winter. During that time, they'll hold their annual Christmas lights display.
"Where else in this area can you go, enjoy the beauty and nature in a nice quiet setting almost all of the time of the year. This is something that a lot of people enjoy."--Steven Yoder, Huntington Parks and Recreation Department Superintendent
After a stroll through Sunken Gardens, you can find a unique dining experience at Joseph Decuis in Roanoke. While the restaurant is only open for dinner, you can grab a quick lunch, and maybe something more, at Joseph Decuis Emporium.
At Joseph Decuis Emporium, customers can buy the farm-raised Wagyu meat, house-made soups, wine, and other locally made products. In addition, the Emporium features lunch with comfort food, such as burgers, corned beef, and southern fried chicken salad.
Both the store and entrees are made up of food grown just a few miles away, so you know what you're eating is fresh. Those fresh ingredients bring big city quality to the small town of Roanoke.
"When you come to Roanoke, you come to a small town, you get that small-town comfort and feel and charm. And then we add to that the flavors, dining experiences one would never expect to find in this setting."--Dennis Meehan, Joseph Decuis Emporium Manager
