Fort Wayne man killed in I-69 crash, tire failure believed to be cause

HUNTINGTON COUNTY, Ind. (WPTA21) - A Fort Wayne man was killed after crashing into the center median cable barriers on I-69 S, south of Markle.

Troopers' preliminary investigation found several witnesses saw the rear tire of the car blowout while heading in the southbound left lane of I-69. Police say, after the blowout, the driver lost control and hit the rear of a semi. They add, the car then headed off the road, crashing into the cable barrier system down in the center grass median.

The driver was identified as Michael D. Tuffs, 60, of Fort Wayne. Tuffs was found unresponsive inside the car and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Huntington County Coroner.

The driver of the semi-trailer was not injured.

The crash is still under investigation, but police say they believe the tire failure is the only contributing factor in the crash.
