Neighbors say they tried to save shooting victim

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) -- Fort Wayne detectives are trying to figure out who shot a man in his car Tuesday night, killing him at the scene.

Neighbors say they ran outside to try to help the man but there was nothing they could do.

"Lately it's been happening almost every night, the shots. But to know that someone has passed away from that is sad," a neighbor said.

Tuesday night, 39-year-old Johnny Mathes Foy III was driving a Toyota Corolla near the intersection of Creighton and John Street, a few blocks from the site of the old police headquarters.

"I heard two pops and then what sounded like a crash and then revving of an engine," neighbor Ethan Masten said.

Detectives visited homes Wednesday morning to ask for witness statements and security camera video.

Some neighbors ran out of their homes to try to help Foy, who had crashed into a parked car on John Street, and was slumped over the steering wheel with his foot on the accelerator.

They say he was bleeding profusely from his abdomen and never regained consciousness.

"It's just rough, it's just rough to see up close, that's all. You see a lot on tv but you never really… until you see it up close, blood coming out of somebody's mouth and they've got a big hole in their stomach, blood everywhere. It was rough," the man said.

Even though they say they frequently hear gunshots in the area, people say they enjoy living in the revitalized Renaissance neighborhood, and are stunned someone died in a car right outside their front doors.

"It's just tragic that it happened in such a beautiful place. I mean, you can see the house and look around and families are here, it's very friendly, and so it's just sad," Masten said.

"I'm really looking into moving because now it's just so close and it's right here and cars slamming in. It fears for me because I don't know if there's going to be any type of retaliation or anything. So that is the scary part," another neighbor said.

They say detectives visited homes Wednesday morning asking for witness statements and security camera video.

The Allen County coroner said Johnny Foy III of Fort Wayne died of a gunshot wound to his chest and ruled his death a homicide -- the 32nd in Allen County this year.
