FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ABC21) – A Fort Wayne officer’s K9 passed away after both teamed up for six years.

Officer Gary Griffith met K9 Bullet in 2010. Both teamed up and served the Fort Wayne community for six years. In 2016, Bullet retired from the Fort Wayne police department.

“She was there for me all the time and I was there for her all the time,” Officer Griffith said. “She read me and I read her.”

Officer Griffith noticed Bullet was struggling to stand up on Wednesday night. Griffith said Bullet endured three seizures within an hour.

Griffith and his family took Bullet to the vet on Thursday morning where she was laid to rest. Griffith said Bullet suffered from Arthritis since last summer. He said his family agreed that they did not want their dog to suffer.

“It was difficult. Taking your best friend out to the vet and knowing the final result she wasn’t going to come home with you,” Officer Griffith said.

Griffith said Bullet always had his back in the streets. He said she was a part of the family.

“We worked every day in the squad car together,” Officer Griffith said. “So I spent more time with her than I did with my own family.”

“I told my husband that if anyone broke into our house, I wouldn’t reach for a gun, I would reach for Bullet,” Kristi Griffith, Gary’s wife said. “She was our protector.”

Griffith’s daughters said Bullet was a big teddy bear and was their best friend. They said losing Bullet hit them hard.

“I cried because of how sad I was to lose my best friend,” Irelynn Griffith, a daughter said.

“She wasn’t going to jump up and run to the door when I walked in,” Sydney Griffith, a daughter said.

Griffith said Bullet made a huge impact on the Fort Wayne Police Department. He said she found $325,000 in a trunk of a car in one major case.

Griffith said Bullet will be greatly missed.

“Thank you for your hard work. Rest easy. We love you,” Officer Griffith said.
