WHITLEY COUNTY, Ind. (WPTA21) — Community members in Columbia City came together Wednesday night just hours after a K9 officer was killed in a fiery crash.
Folks in the small town lined the streets to pay their respects to K9 Officer Cas.
“Our little town got rocked by something pretty big,” said Aylsa Babcock.
On Wednesday, a fleeing suspect smashed into a police cruiser with K9 Cas trapped inside. The car burst into flames.
“I was just in shock,” said Jody Engle.
“She died doing her job,” said Babcock.
Babcock says people in the small town are close knit, so as soon as she heard Cas died? She knew it was her duty to help honor her.
“When we heard it was her, and the flag came up, I wanted to bring my son out here so he could say goodbye to her.”
A goodbye that some folks at the memorial say is just the beginning of the healing process.
“Like I said, it’s like losing one of your own, it really is, and it’s gonna hit everyone really hard for a long time,” said Engle.
Folks in the community say they believe there will be more services for K9 Cas in the near future.
