Image is Everything

There was a lot to admire at the Garrett Museum of Art’s recent exhibition honoring transportation..paintings, photographs and sculpture focusing on humans fixation with moving about. One piece in particular stood out, a fine watercolor immortalizing a treasured classic.

“There are so many nice surprises with watercolor,” says Fort Wayne artist Anita Trick. “Especially these old cars, they’re so beautifully made and so intimately made. With watercolor I want the detail there.”

Classic cars are just the latest in a long line of subjects that interest Anita Trick, a painter comfortable working in both watercolor and oils, and someone who uses her art to discover more about the world she’s painting.

“I love learning and with painting,” she says. “I never just say ‘Oh I’m going to paint a painting now.’ I do research on it look at lots of background on it.”

Anita Trick came to painting later in life. As a career military officer’s wife she moved frequently, a fact that often shows up in the diversity of her work. And despite having little formal training her images are colorful, often poignant and always with a story to tell. Landscapes are a favorite but many times the human footprint will also appear, a presence that far from being a diversion, always seems to harmonize with the natural surroundings.

“To me it’s all one,” she says. “I enjoy painting both what God and man has created. And I think that somehow brings it all together.”

Trick is adept at creating natural scenes but is equally comfortable tackling architecture…this fine image of the Spencerian covered bridge in Dekalb County and a stunning portrait of Fort Wayne’s Tennessee Avenue bridge. As much as she enjoys creating art Anita Trick says she also paints for her own spiritual well being and if she has any goal for her art it’s simply to enjoy more of the same.

“It’s a fulfillment for me as a quiet time where I can get just totally into it and forget about everything,” she says. “I just want to be a little bit better I guess at what I’m already doing.”
