EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) — An Indiana woman has been arrested for allegedly stealing money intended for the burial plot and headstone of a 3-year-old boy who died in a hot car. Caroline Rich of Evansville faces preliminary theft and fraud charges. She’s a family service counselor at a company that owns a cemetery and funeral home. Court documents say Oliver Dill’s family paid Rich more than $19,000 for a burial plot, headstone and services, but she pocketed all but $1,000. Dill died in July after being left in a hot car.
MUNSTER, Ind. (AP) — A 14-year-old boy has died after being found unresponsive in a northwestern Indiana high school’s swimming pool. Lake Ridge New Tech Schools’ superintendent says Curtis Walton was pronounced dead early Thursday at the University of Chicago Medical Center. Walton was found unresponsive Wednesday at the bottom of a Calumet High School pool that was open to the school’s football players. Trainers tried to revive the teen, who was a freshman member of the football team.
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — A 23-story hotel is set for construction at the tribal casino in South Bend. The Michigan-based Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians says it decided to build the hotel as business has been thriving at its Four Winds South Bend Casino since it opened in January 2018. The hotel’s 317 rooms will make it the largest in the South Bend area. Officials expect construction starting before the end of this year.
COLUMBIA CITY, Ind. (AP) — A northeastern Indiana man has been charged in the death of a police dog that became trapped inside a burning police cruiser following a high-speed crash. Thirty-one-year-old Clarence L. Shearer was formally charged Wednesday with several counts in the dog’s death. Police were investigating an armed carjacking on July 10 when Shearer allegedly crashed into a sheriff’s deputy’s cruiser. A police dog was trapped inside the burning cruiser and died.
