Fort Wayne churches to open doors for tour

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) — While many people know of our nickname as the summit city, Fort Wayne is also known as ‘the city of churches.’ On Friday, our churches will be showing us why.

20 of the most historic and beautiful churches are opening their doors to the public Friday for people to explore the city’s religious architecture. Organizers say the buildings face unique maintenance challenges that, combined with shrinking congregations, make it harder to meet building demands.

They say by making people aware of these buildings, they hope to build a desire to preserve them for future generations.

The event goes from 6 pm until 10 pm Friday. Participating churches include:

Emmanuel Lutheran Church – Building Faith in the City
St. John Lutheran Church (ELCA) Fort Wayne, Indiana
Trinity Episcopal Church Fort Wayne
Plymouth Congregational Church of Fort Wayne
First Presbyterian Church of Fort Wayne
