Proposed ordinance aims at limiting new gas stations in Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) — A proposed amendment would limit the zoning categories that would allow gas stations.

The Fort Wayne Plan Commission is hosting a public hearing Monday on the proposed amendment. The amendment addresses issues identified by the Common Council.

If approved, the amendment would:

  • Address the number of special uses for gas stations available in the existing zoning districts
  • Clarify how existing nonconforming gas station uses will be treated
  • Update the Special Use tables as needed
  • Clarify the definitions of “convenience store” and “gas station” to differentiate between the two uses.

The Journal Gazette reports Councilman Glynn Hines says many gas stations and convenience stores are predatory outlets for candy, cigarettes and do not help to alleviate the food desert in the 6th district.

The public hearing is set for 5:30 Monday in room 035 on the basement level of the Citizens Square version.
