Fort Wayne man sentenced for December 2017 shooting

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) — A simple cigarette butt sealed a Fort Wayne man’s fate and sent him to prison.

Bryan Flowers was sentenced to 85 years in prison for the December 2017 shooting death of De’andre Voss.  Voss died after being shot in the head in the 1400 block of Greene Street. ABC21 previously reported police say witnesses heard gunshots and witnessed the man lying in the grass bleeding. Paramedics pronounced him dead when they arrived.

Court documents say surveillance video captured the suspect in the case pulling a handgun and shooting Voss in the head. The suspect then got into a van and tossed a cigarette butt on the ground.

The department was able to tie Flowers to the van but was not able to place him at the crime scene until results from the cigarette butt came back. Crime scene technicians found the cigarette butt and sent it to the State Police lab for DNA testing. Police say the results show it had Flower’s DNA on it.
